The mounting dilemma.
Every time, I step up on the mounting block and put my foot in the stirrup, Jewels will move out of reach.
Step 1: Get off the block, or fall off, because it caught me off balance.
Step 2: Again, I walk her next to the block. Walk her forwards and backwards until she stands still.
Step 3: I step back up on the block. Make sure my saddle is tight. Fix the rains in my hand.
Step 4: Put my foot in the stirrup. and bounce up halfway into the saddle, then…
Step 4: She moves!
It usually takes me several tries.
Sunday, it hit me. My upper body strength isn’t what it should be. Just maybe, I’m causing her discomfort while lifting myself up in the saddle. I’m going to try something a little bit different. Mount her from a higher place. I led her out to the flatbed trailer, stepped up on the back of the trailer and led her around to the wheel wells. I stepped onto the well, swung my leg over and she never moved. Just to make sure it wasn’t a fluke, I dismounted back onto the trailer and did it again.
She stood stock still.
Jewels and I worked through another problem area.
